Prevent Serious Eye Conditions with These Simple Steps

The eyes are undoubtedly some of the most important organs in our body, so it’s important that we take care of them. There are a lot of problems associated with degrading eye health, but you can avoid them with proper eye care. These are simple steps that you can easily incorporate in your daily lives without needing to go out of your way. But many take their eyes for granted, so proper eye care is often neglected. You can take the necessary precautions right now so you’ll have to deal with fewer issues as you get older.

Protect your eyes from the sun
Many have told you not to look at the sun because it can severely impair your vision, but did you know that it can still cause damage even if you’re not looking directly at it? The UV rays can cause cataracts, skin cancer, abnormal growth, and other conditions. But these are preventable if you buy sunglasses that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB light. This kind of sunglasses cost more than the $5 kinds you see at the corner, though, so you’ll have to shell out money at first. Always wear a pair whenever you go out, and you always get the added benefit of preventing wrinkles around your eyes.

Don’t rub your eyes
Rubbing can expose your eyes to germs and dirt on your hands. It’s risky to make your hands come in contact with your eyes as this may lead to lasting issues. Your cornea is also susceptible to being scratched and even permanently damaged. If your eyes are itchy, you can instead use cold compress, eye drops. Or if you have allergies or an eye condition, see an eye doctor to treat them.

Drink a lot of water
Drinking lots of water is generally good for your health, but it is also important for your eyes. If you’re properly hydrated, your eyes will produce tears to keep them healthy, so be sure that you’re drinking the recommended amount of water.

Avoid stressing your eyes
Our daily lives are almost completely spent on looking at screens, be it TV, cellphone, or laptop. This intense use of our eyes can make them tired, or worse, be permanently impaired. Pause every 20 minutes from whatever you’re doing and spend 20 seconds looking at an object 20 feet away.

Keep in regular contact with your eye doctor
Having regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist doesn’t hurt, which will also help you detect conditions early. Some conditions get worse because people just let them be, but you can nip it in the bud if you get help from your doctor right away.
